Podcast is to describe a method called Design and Guide. It is about creating systems and guiding people through the system.
Episode 1 - Systems
Episode is about systems. What that means, why they’re important, and how to use systems for teaching/leading someone.
Sketch 1 idea
Parent trying to tell their kids what they have to do. You have to do this, you have to do that… “No, we go to the movies on Friday if you have 30 points. How do you earn points? Let me tell you…” Then RAP about how to get points.
Point it makes
Parents have systems, with rules, and points and the such
Joke
The rap. Not a joke, but the entertainment piece of it.
Sketch 2 idea
Parent telling kids to be good and doorbell rings. Thanks babysitter for coming over as they have lost 6 over the last year. Then goes though a quick and fast list of what not to do. Then leaves. Babysitter asks the kids that that makes sense to them. Babysitter replies, “me either. Want to clean up then play video games?”
Point it makes
Systems can be complex and they can be simple.
Joke
The fast rant is rhythmic and the babysitter’s response.
Sketch 3 idea
Parent is late coming home and stressing about having to put them to bed. Better have already eaten. Comes in and stops blabbing. Asks where the kids are and says you didn’t have to clean up. Babysitter responds, they are in bed. And I didn’t clean up, they did. Parent asks, what did you do? Response “I made it easy for them to win”
Point it makes
Systems need to work, not be complex or full of rules. It needs to function with the learner.
Joke
Break of stress from crazy kids.
Episode 2 - Design
Episode is about designing systems. What that means, why it’s important, and how to plan systems for teaching/leading someone.
Sketch 1 idea
Artist (designer) applies finishing touches on work before the grand opening and showing of their art. They have a lot to do and are vocal about it. They hope people like this.
Point it makes
A lot of work goes into designing something, especially something special.
Joke
Funny to hear frantic, anxious, and/or worried artist before big opening.
Sketch 2 idea
No one gets it and starts tearing down components of the exhibit. (Things mentioned worried about having to finish in sketch 1?)
Point it makes
It is not about how hard we work at designing a system, it’s about the efficiency.
Joke
Complanes/frantic while tearing down the exhibit. Example “You don’t like the space jewels positioned exactly the square root of the distance to the plants apart? Then away they go. Now are you happy?” Funny rant.
Sketch 3 idea
Torn down, people start to like it.
Point it makes
You do not need something complex for it to be great.
Joke
The turn. The tension built up from the first two sketches, artist finally gets what he wants.
Episode 3 - Guide
Episode is about guiding people through systems. What that means, why it’s important, and how to guide someone through a system.
Sketch 1 idea
Someone trying to teach someone and they do it all for them. Learner does not learn.
Point it makes
Learner needs to learn, not have it done for them.
Joke
Funny character about what they are trying to help with. Example: “And you want to go ahead and, here let me, if you could give me that. See you want to take this and put a little glue on it and here press it down like this. And give me a second and there you go. It’s finished, you can have it back. Great work. That looks great. Now you can build a dream catcher.”
Sketch 2 idea
Someone trying to help and they do nothing for them and give no help.
Point it makes
Learner needs to learn, they need some guidance.
Joke
From the learner's perspective. Trying to ask for help and no response. Now they are doing something wrong and keeps going. “Should I attach the wing to the wheel? Does that look right? Do you have a nail gun for this balloon? Was that supposed to crack”
Sketch 3 idea
A strong emotion with relief. Learner taking guidance and getting it right.
1) Excited/elighted - someone having epiphanies over and over “OH! 2+2 is 4!”
2) Relaxed/comfortable - in relaxed, almost asleep sound, “Oh… 2 plus two is four. That sounds nice.”
Point it makes
It’s like goldilocks. You need the right amount of guidance and the learner is in the right spot.
Joke
The break of tension from being unsuccessful to successful.
